Mormon Killed Here
Tunnel Hill, Georgia
Local Christians didn't appreciate the preaching of Mormon Elder Joseph Standing from Salt Lake City, so he was shot dead by a lynch mob on July 21, 1879. Another Mormon (who was not harmed) said that Standing pulled a gun on the mob in self-defense, and wound up riddled with over 20 bullets.
Decades later, with passions cooled and Christianity less imperiled, the Mormons were allowed to purchase the death site and turn it into a little park. There's a large upright stone slab with a bronze plaque that outlines what happened, a hand pump for a spring, a picnic table, and a small rock in the grass engraved "JS," marking the spot where Standing fell.
