Cancer Survivors Plaza
Memphis, Tennessee
Dedicated in 2008, this is the 19th Cancer Survivors Plaza, which have been built in cities across the nation by billionaires Richard and Annette Bloch. All of the plazas have their quirks, but most include some variation of its vortex-like central sculpture named, "Cancer... There's Hope." As described by the plaque at this one: "The back five figures are cancer patients and their supporters preparing to enter treatment, represented by the maze. Note the fear, determination, and hope on their faces in contrast to the joy of the front three, signifying successful treatment." The three in the front also appear to have emerged significantly younger, with clothes and hairstyles circa 1980.
The plaque adds that this cancer sculpture is "the last work of the world renowned sculptor, Victor Salmons," and that, "He claimed it to be his finest."
An extra bonus at this Cancer Survivors Plaza is what appears to be a Cancer Labyrinth marked out in a large paved lot behind the sculpture.
