Statue of Sea Hag and Bernard the Vulture
Chester, Illinois
Unveiled in 2010, this granite statue is part of a decades-long project to honor hometown hero Elzie Crisler Segar, creator of Popeye, with tributes to his Sunday Funnies family scattered along a "character trail" in town.
Sea Hag, who according to Popeye lore is the last witch on earth, has been sculpted with her enchanted flute and Bernard the Vulture, her avian familiar. Her malevolence toward Popeye was driven by her envy of his love for Olive Oyl, who occasionally had to beat up Sea Hag because Popeye refused to hit a woman.
The statue stands on a little patch of grass between the Chester McDonald's and Wal-Mart, and has its own park bench. Order your Happy Meal to go, and dine in a unique spot.
