Statue of Alice the Goon
Chester, Illinois
Unveiled in 2012, the granite statue of Alice the Goon is part of a decades-long project to honor hometown hero Elzie Crisler Segar, creator of Popeye, with tributes to his Sunday Funnies family scattered along a "character trail" in town.
Alice the Goon is the most famous of the Goons enslaved by Sea Hag (the 2010 statue). Standing eight feet tall, with a bald head, large nose, hairy arms and legs, and no mouth, Alice quickly evolved from a fearsome Popeye foe to a domesticated, dress-wearing monster mom (Popeye in the 1930s was stranger than you might think).
According to Debbie Brooks, president of the Popeye Picnic Committee, Alice the Goon was chosen to stand in front of the Chester Center plaza because her handbag made it look like she was shopping. Incidentally, that's a flowered lady's hat on her head, not a crown.
