50 Million Pennies in Clear Outdoor Box (Gone) (Gone)
Jackson, Mississippi
On Mother's Day 2006, the Mississippi Baptist Convention erected a clear-siding shipping container, 13 feet long and seven feet tall, across the street from the state capitol. Then they began filling it with pennies.
In October 2008 they reached their goal: 140 tons of pennies, 50 million of them, each representing an abortion. Titled "Memorial to the Missing," it's a long-term visual reminder for Mississippi's state politicians, who can see the boxed-in pile from their office windows across the street.
"While some speak of pro-choice," reads an accompanying plaque, "these babies had no choice."
