Killed by a Yankee in Her Vegetable Patch (Gone)
Knoxville, Tennessee
A small disk inset into a brick walkway outside First Tennessee Brokerage (a former bank) marks the spot where the widow Jane Lonas was killed by a Yankee. Lonas was 67 years old, the mother of 10, when she walked to her vegetable patch on the morning of October 7, 1863, to get a head of cabbage. She discovered hungry Union soldiers raiding the plot, stood her ground, and had her skull crushed by a rifle butt.
The Lonas house was torn down in 1956 for the Western Plaza shopping center. The disk was unveiled with much fanfare in 2012. Jane is buried several miles away in the private Lonas Family Cemetery off of what's now Fillmore Avenue.
