S.C. Billboards: Confucius, Do Not Pass
Howes Cave, New York
"I always wanted to do an homage to Chinese landscape painting; the gag that the Secret Caverns waterfall goes all the way to China," said artist Kurt Piller, who created his "Confucius Says" billboard with spray paint. "It's vaguely related to caverns. It's got limestone." Kurt painted the Secret Caverns Cool Caveman Dude as an Eastern mystic, and the bat lodge as a Chinese temple.
On the flip side of the billboard, "Do Not Pass" chides drivers who somehow failed to stop at Secret Caverns a mile behind them up the road. The painting includes a profusion of highway signs and references to law enforcement, and a roadblock made of dinosaur bones. A flying lizard police drone is labeled "NC 1701" on one of its wings, a reference to the Starship Enterprise. In the distant background, caverns owner R.J. Mallery somehow leaps over his red Trans Am in his blue Jeep.
