Dilley's watermelon statue.

Statue of Half-Eaten Watermelon

Field review by the editors.

Dilley, Texas

Our night visit to Dilley bore bitter fruit. Dilley calls itself the "Self-proclaimed Watermelon Capital of Texas," yet their statue is no more than five feet long -- and possibly smaller than some real watermelons. The cement statue in the city park dates back at least 40 years.

Local watermelon production has averaged 15 million pounds, so Dilley is no slouch. Harvesting happens in June.

The watermelon water tower in Luling, Texas is much larger, but harder to pose with.
