Homeless Jesus
Davidson, North Carolina
According to Canadian artist Tim Schmalz, his bronze sculpture of Homeless Jesus was rejected by cathedrals in New York and Toronto, then blessed by the Pope in Rome, before being installed in Davidson on February 21, 2014.
The sculpture depicts a homeless figure asleep on a bench, covered in a blanket, and it immediately sparked criticism from some locals, who found it disrespectful. Homeless Jesus is only identified by his feet, each punctured with a spike hole, which stick out from under the blanket. There is no halo, dove, sacred heart, or other telltale Jesus iconography.
There's enough space on the bench to sit next to the feet.
