Slabs of US 40 and Lincoln Highway.

Monument: Slabs of US 40 and Lincoln Highway

Field review by the editors.

Auburn, California

In 2014 the Placer County Water Agency had to dig up part of Ophir Road to lay a new pipeline underneath it. But before Ophir Road was just Ophir Road it was US 40, and before that it was the Lincoln Highway -- the main route over the Sierras before Interstate 80 was built.

Informed by the local community of this history, the Water Agency saved a pavement slab it had dug up from US 40, and outlined in the ground a pavement slab of the Lincoln Highway, and incorporated them both into a layered roadside monument.
