Boy and the Boot
Wadsworth, Ohio
In an act of civic generosity, the city of Sandusky lent the town of Wadsworth its Boy and the Boot statue in late 2013, so that Wadsworth could make a copy for itself. That copy was unveiled with much fanfare on Memorial Day 2014. The boy stands in the center of a new fountain, water dribbling from the hole in his leaky boot.
Wadsworth had previously had its own Boy and the Boot statue, but it disappeared during World War II, possibly melted for scrap metal in a burst of patriotic fervor (If so, Uncle Sam was disappointed; the statue was made of a wartime-worthless "pot metal" alloy).
The Memorial Day unveiling of the Boy and the Boot was deliberate, as Wadsworth believes that the statue is a war memorial, honoring a Boy who carried water to wounded Civil War soldiers in his Boot, pouring it from a hole in the toe.
