Corner of Hatfield and McCoy Streets
Matewan, West Virginia
The town of Matewan didn't even exist when the Hatfield and McCoys were killing each other, so its belated embrace of their famous feud seems a little contrived. It is, however, the nearest modern population center to where most of the killings took place, and it was a thoughtful gesture when Matewan's historic district renamed two of its streets after the feuding clans, and even had them intersect each other as a symbol of let-bygones-be-bygones cooperation. The intersection is off at the very edge of town, and despite the presence of local businesses such as Hatfield-McCoy Tours and Hatfield-McCoy Liquors, we were the only people during our visit who seemed to notice it.
