Hatfield-McCoy Love Baby Grave
Burnwell, Kentucky
The Hatfield-McCoy feud really began boiling in 1880. That's when Johnse Hatfield, son of clan leader "Devil Anse" Hatfield, accidentally met Roseanna McCoy, daughter of clan leader Randolph McCoy, at a local event. The two immediately began a torrid romance. Roseanna became pregnant. This could have led to peace between the two feuding clans, but it didn't. Roseanna was rejected by both sides; the love baby, Sally, lived only a few months before dying; Johnse ran off with Roseanna's 16-year-old cousin; Roseanna lost her will to live and perished from a broken heart.
Modern visitors can experience a little of Roseanna's pain by climbing the 130 steps to her baby's grave, atop a hill with a number of other local baby graves. All of the tiny headstones are overshadowed by the large, modern granite markers explaining the love baby's significance.
