Atlanta's smiley face water tower.

Smiley Face Water Tower

Field review by the editors.

Atlanta, Illinois

Atlanta is a small Illinois town that has put recent effort into promoting itself as a Route 66 destination. In 2003, the town's 150th birthday, Cicero's storied Route 66 Hot Dog Muffler Man moved here to a spot of honor along Main St.

That same year the municipal water tower was repainted, at a cost of $175K -- and updated with canary yellow bulb with black smiley face, the base painted white.
