No longer there, was located between 8th and 9th streets on Seawall Blvd. I remember coming to Galveston in the mid- to late '50s. There was a coffee shop on the ground floor; always thought it was the coolest place to eat. A real tragedy the City fathers did not have the vision to preserve such a unique architectural landmark.
[James Stephenson, 08/28/2013]Hotel Shaped like an Ocean Liner - Gone
When in Galveston I came across this old hotel, called the Mayflower, shaped like an ocean liner. Note the place has not only an anchor but a smoke stack! In shipping circles this kind of profile was known as the "three-island" type... common on cargo liners of the pre-war era. It appears to be from the late '30s - early '40s time period but unfortunately I did not think about stopping to look inside nor ask about it.
