Phoenix, Oregon: Barkley's Tavern & Menagerie - Burnt

Barkley's Tavern & Menagerie sadly is gone. It seems there was a fire several years ago that destroyed most of the animals. The bar was rebuilt by new owners and is now called the Full Moon Saloon. They have not bothered to replace the Barkley's sign. After the fire, the original ower left a half-burnt bear out in the lobby with a "donations for restoration" box. People didn't take it too seriously. The new bar has wood paneling and no animals. While the locals are very friendly, there isn't much to see. [Tony Melito, 07/27/1999]

[RA: We visited 10 years ago; Barkley's proudly displayed its rare collection of old guns and mounted animals from many countries. The bar was made of black oak, built in 1890. The best postcard showed a stuffed ape next to a pinball machine, and a bear next to the arcade bowling machine.]
