Portland, Oregon: Space Room bar

Portland, OR, has the very Jetsons-esque Space Room bar on Hawthorne in the SE section. It's one of those old bars leftover from the very loungy sixties and decked out with goofy space motifs, pseudo ``Lost In Space'' lamps and bad paintings of lunar landscapes and other naive, quasi-futuristic visions of the 1950's and `60s. Cheesy, semi-futuristic arches -- as if from a bad Irwin Allen TV series -- inhabit this silly place, with much of the light fixtures and doorways covered with loopy architectural designs reminiscent of bad sci fi films from the `50s. It's one heck of a popular spot in the city, however, partially because of its kitschy qualities but partially because it serves kickin' drinks. [Andre Hagestedt, 01/06/1999]
