Coopers Mills, Maine: Elmer's Barn of Junk and Dead Things

Junk haven it is; mostly an antique store in a barn. We didn't see many dead things, but maybe Elmer was out of stock when we visited.

Elmer's Barn

I visited recently and found it to be nothing more exciting than a large barn of moldering antiques, overpriced and rotting, with a crotchety (and not in a charming way) proprietor. A typewriter without keys marked at $50 is just depressing. If you're looking for a bathroom, a long meandering series of signs and tape on the floor lead you to an "out of order" sign that has been up for years.

Elmer's Barn of Junk and Dead Things

Oft recommended by New Englanders, this junk haven -- a big barn of dusty antiques -- offers three floors of dimly lit piles of old packaging, furniture, household appliances. Elmer's Barn is like the attic of a crazy person, though no one item is particularly shocking. Other than a few mounted game heads and cattle skulls, we didn't notice any dead things.

Elmer Wilson is a middle-aged guy who sits behind the cash register and doesn't say much. There is a chunky roughly carved wooden version of him on the first floor. Elmer's Barn has been in operation for twenty-five years. Brochure proclaims, "You got to visit Elmer's Barn" and "Not liable for any accidents or injuries." We visited in 2001; but it appears Elmer's is still in operation.
