Hemphill, Texas - Space Shuttle Columbia Crash Site

Hemphill is the town where the Columbia crashed -- there are markers and an area to visit. There is also a jail in the square that has been converted into a museum. The jail was the last one to hang a man in East Texas. The museum is 2.00 a person, and free to children under 10. There is a large fishing industry --the Toledo Bend Lake is manmade, and there are plenty of bass, crappie and other breeds. [Denise, 08/06/2005]

[RA: A scattering of small, informal markers around this small town show where debris fell from the 2003 Columbia shuttle disaster. There's a proposal to build a museum and memorial park in Hemphill to remember Columbia's crew.]
