Visalia, California - Large John Muir Head

Giant John Muir Head lives! He gazes roughly in the direction of Sequoia National Park from his post at the intersection of Avenue 296 (CA 198 - go figure) and CA 99 near Visalia, California. He's right there at the exit -- jammed into the southwest corner. I almost drove off the road as I witnessed such rugged majesty! And don't kid yourself - he is LARGE. I'm talking LARGE! Yeah! [Miss Erica, 09/07/2008]

Carved John Muir Head. Visalia, California - Large John Muir Head

This giant chainsaw carved bust of John Muir is visible from highway 99 just outside of Visalia. He watches over large piles of wood by-products and seems to know you tossed those glass bottles yesterday rather than recycling. But I'm sure he is a forgiving carving. [Anna Newman, 11/01/2005]

[RA: Founder of the Sierra Club, naturalist, conservationist John Muir -- carved from a tree. Nice. February 2008: Reported as moved to the College of the Sequoias.]
