Visitor Tips and News About Howe Caverns
In 2007 Howe Caverns in upstate New York was purchased by new owners, who vowed to return their Earth Hole to its early days of tourism glory. 2011 appears to be the year they make good their promise. There's not much that can be done with the cave itself (not without breaking a long list of environmental laws) but the Caverns has been busy aboveground. It's unveiled a robot version of Lester Howe -- an animatronic of the cave's namesake -- who tells visitors how he discovered the cave when he found some cows standing near its cool entrance. It expects to open on July 4th weekend a new "adventure" course of zip lines and rope bridges. And the caverns are reportedly drafting plans for a 22-acre "dinosaur canyon" populated with 24 animatronic dinosaurs.
Also in 2007, Howe's owners pledged to end its long-standing feud with up-the-road rival Secret Caverns. So far both sides appear to have cooperated -- but we wouldn't blame Secret if it succumbed to temptation and created low-budget animatronics of its own icons, such as the beefy Cool Caveman Dude, or the skeletal postmortem Discovery Cows.[RoadsideAmerica.com Team, 06/07/2011]
