Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii: Gravity HillA public road where cars mysteriously roll uphill, tilting your preconceptions about how things work. Beyond science, or optical illusion?
- Iao Valley Rd, Wailuku, Maui, HI
- Drive up Iao Valley Rd until you reach the end at Iao Valley State Park. Go downhill until you see a large tree on your left (it's a flat area). It's the only 15 foot wide tree, all alone. Park in neutral facing the park exit, side by side with the tree, which will now be on the right. The car slowly moves and picks up speed and stops on a hill near a white stone wall.
- Public road. Hazard flashers recommended. Use at your own risk.
Visitor Tips and News About Gravity Hill
This is freaky! Park your car late at night by the "big tree" before I'ao Valley Park. Don't worry -- you'll see the tree on your left, it's the only 15-ft. wide tree, all alone. Park in neutral facing the exit, car off and late at night. Your car will roll slowly up the hill. And this is a hill.[lauren, 05/08/2009]
There's an old story of cars rolling uphill after leaving them in neutral on flat ground. The car slowly moves and picks up speed and stops on a hill near a white stone wall. It's real easy to spot Iao Valley -- it's the main mountain past Wailuku Town that comes down side by side, with the volcano right in the middle of it. Head straight between those two big mountains your right into the heart of iao valley[Ronald S. Dwan, 01/24/2006]
