Temperanceville, Virginia - Presbyterious Francis Makemie Monument Just an update on the Francis Makemie Monument in
Temperanceville. The grassy area surrounding the monument has been cleaned
up, thanks to a group of civic-minded individuals. The Rev. Makemie now
stands tall over a green pasture and a well-kept fence surrounding Francis
Makemie Park.

Temperanceville, Virginia - Presbyterious Monument Way out on the Eastern Shore of Virginia can be found the base of a monument to 'the founder of presbyterianism', Francis Makemie. It is extremely decrepit and located in a small clearing at the dead-end of an old road used mainly for very non-presbyterious activities, in spite of the close proximity of Mr. Makemie's (actually a not-very-presbyterious name) remains. The Salisbury, MD "Daily Times" carried an article about it in 1996, and gives these directions: "From Route 13 in Temperanceville, VA, turn right onto Saxis Road (Rte 695). Travel about six miles, turning right onto Monument Road. About a mile down the road, Makemie Monument Park will be on the left." My husband and I stumbled upon the place in 1995, and would have to say that most of the back roads out there have odd things to see.
