The Big Peanut is there because Pelion is the home of the Pelion Peanut Festival. The festival takes place in early August, where they have loads of boiled peanuts, live music and a parade.
While the big peanut still looks the same, there is now a gas station behind it.

Big Peanut If you go down highway 302 from Pelion to Columbia, down the road on the right, there is a big peanut right outside what looks like an old gas station. No sign about it, just a huge (what looks to be) a painted cast iron peanut. It could use a paint job, but interesting.
