Light of Truth Universal Shrine - LOTUS Very peaceful place to walk around and very beautiful views.

The Lotus Temple - Yogaville Official description: The Light Of Truth Universal Shrine (LOTUS) is the realization of Sri Gurudev's universal teaching that "Truth is One, Paths are Many." Opened in July 1986, LOTUS is dedicated to the light of all faiths and to world peace, and embodies Sri Gurudev's efforts to foster religious harmony throughout the world. Built in the shape of a lotus blossom - the ancient symbol for the spiritual unfoldment of the soul - the Shrine is a sanctuary for silent meditation, contemplation, and prayer. It is a place where people of all backgrounds and faiths can come together under one roof to honor individual traditions while realizing the ultimate spiritual unity of all.
Yogaville is located on the James River -- absolutely breathtaking views. We toured the temple -- lots of renovation going on.
The Temple was a little tatty-but it will be rejuvenated for the 20th anniversary next week. Artist Peter Max and other famous devotees will attend. Legitimate center for Yoga training and classes year-round. Sincere super-friendly staff -both guided and self-guided tours. You would never guess this place is in central Virginia.

Other smaller interesting buildings on site. No entry fee. Hotel and meals available.
[Page, 09/02/2000]Swannanoa may no longer have University of Science and Philosophy, but Virginia still has The LOTUS in Yogaville. The LOTUS, Light Of Truth Universal Shrine, is about 5 miles north of VA-56 on County Road 604 in Buckingham county. I first found this place about 15 years ago and find it an nice diversion from run of the mill tourist sites.
While the LOTUS is not up to, or is that down to, your usual tacky standards, it is unique. The LOTUS, itself is a building, whose exterior is designed to resemble a Lotus bud. The interior of this structure is a room dedicated to uniting all faiths, Eastern, Western, African, and Native American.
