Ray, Ohio: Leo Petroglyphs
An open-air shelter built in the 1930s keeps rain and snow off about 40 figures carved into sandstone rock, likely by ancient Native Americans. Nobody's sure what the symbols mean now.

I don't advise going to Ray to get there. Those are bad roads and the Bridge is out. I would use Hwy 35 to Sour Run Rd then drive north to Raysville Rd. Left on Raysville Rd and an immediate left on Park Rd. The Nature Trail is .4 mile on the left.

This must have been nice when it was taken care of. The shelter, with picnic tables and a grill, is a good area for a small cookout or family gathering. Some of the petroglyphs are really easy to see while others are harder to make out.
[Brooke Chesson-Riedel, 08/27/2016]Petroglyphs of 40 figures are carved onto an exposed portion of Black Hand Sandstone bedrock, probably by late prehistoric Fort Ancient Indians who lived here 700 years ago.
Covered by a nice wooden shelter, the carvings looked better before someone filled them in with a black marker. The meaning of the petroglyphs cannot be determined with certainty, but it is thought they might be tribal symbols, or depict activities in the history of the group. There are fish, a bird, an unidentified animal, three human feet, a human head in a headdress, and more.
The Ohio Historical Society plaque is dated 1972.
