Eagle River, Wisconsin - Carl's Wood Art Museum

We go to Eagle River all the time and I am sad to say that last summer the Wood Museum was closed. I do not know if it is permanent. It was always a family favorite. [Leah Biester, 04/19/2007]

Eagle River, Wisconsin - Translucent Wood Room

Carl Schel's Wood Art Museum is in Eagle River. Carl is dead, but he carved a lot of wood before he died, and his son has established this place to display the work and perhaps make a little money at the same time.

There's a short wooden statue of Carl in the museum that speaks with Carl's recorded voice.

Carl's son has added carvings of his own, too. His mother-in-law was behind the counter (the son's, not Carl's), and his kids were roaming around.

In addition to the numerous wood carvings, there are also a lot of antique lumbering tools around, as well as a decent burl collection.

I liked the games the best. In addition to Paul Bunyan's Pinball Machine, there are giant versions of traditional wood folk puzzles. [Craig S. Thom, 10/04/1998]

[RA: Carl's reportedly had a "Translucent Wood Room," where 120 backlit wood veneers could be viewed. Kinda wished we hadn't skipped it on our WI trip this summer. Carl Schels died in 1996 at age 90.]
