Virgin Mary Appeared Here

Statues of Lincoln, Washington, and Jesus stand together at the Mediatrix of Peace Shrine. Mary, Mother of God, visited in 1950, and reportedly still occasionally stops by.

Washington, Jesus and Lincoln.

Virgin Mary Appeared Here

As of September 2014, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Jesus are back in front of the partially constructed House of Prayer.

Virgin Mary Appeared Here

We ventured to the shrine to see the Lincoln, Washington, and Jesus statues only to find out that they have been removed for the time being. The church they have been trying to build for 50 years took over their spot.

[Jean Dunk, 08/14/2012]

We spoke with the Shrine, and they confirmed that Abe, George, and Jesus are in storage for now while work is underway on the adjacent House of Prayer. "We didn't want to drop something and smash them," the Shrine told us.

Mediatrix of Peace Shrine

In the 1950s, a woman named Mary Ann Van Hoof had a vision of the Virgin Mary in her backyard and it created a sensationalistic pilgrimage by millions of people to the site. A shrine was built, complete with religious statues in hyperbolic chambers! It is a fairly large site with a path leading to different scenes behind glass. Plans for a 2,000 seat cathedral were started in the '60s, but the footers and half walls are left standing to rot right now because of lack of funds. There is a 24-hour perpetual prayer hut, replica of the lady's house with a window full of demonic looking dolls hailing a Mother Mary doll dressed in black, and gift shop, which sells stuff that looks like it was made in the 1960s. Lots of free literature too. It is nothing like those "Biblical Gardens" tourist attractions. There is one statue of Jesus hung on the cross with bloody cuts all over his body....a lot of the depictions are very violent.
