Grounded Ship In Lake Ontario

The Grounded Ship was a replica of the Grand Hermie used by Jacques Cartier in 1535-1536 and 1541-1542 to explore Canada. This ship was built in 1967 for Expo 67 as part of the nautical theme as Expo 67 which was on islands in the St. Lawrence Seaway. The ship was taken to Quebec City and abandoned in 2001.

I have never heard who bought it, but they'd hoped to use it as a tourist site and the project never got off the ground.

Grounded Ship - Burnt and Unwanted

I'm a resident of Vineland, Ontario and there's not really much of a story behind this ship. It was a floating casino/restaurant in Montreal and went out of business. At some point, it was towed to the Jordan Harbor where the current restaurant was going to fix it up and open it again as a floating restaurant. My sister had her wedding pictures taken on board in 1998. At some point in the last 5 years someone thought it would be funny to set this gorgeous ship on fire. Since the fire, it has sat and begun to rust (sadly). It truly is a gorgeous ship on board and is a shame it was lit on fire. Since the fire, no one will or has come forward to claim ownership.

We believe the ship was actually part of Expo '67 in Montreal BUT we can't confirm this.

That's the story behind this ship as the residents here in Vineland, ON know!

Grounded ship.

Grounded Ship In Lake Ontario

There is a grounded ship on the north side of the QEW, just across from Jordan Harbor at the Beacon Harborside Marina. It is clearly visible from the highway. To get to it, you have to exit the QEW to the North Service Road. I have no idea if there is some sort of story associated with the ship, but it's certainly worth a stop.

Rusting ship.

Rusting Ship

There's this large, rusting ship along the QEW between Niagara Falls and Toronto, near Lincoln. I spotted it on my first trip past in 2000 and it was still there in 2006. I've always wondered why it's there, but never stopped. My fiance was driving when I took this picture in November 2006.
