Norfolk, Virginia - Life-Sized Elephant - Tribute to Hard Life in the Circus This beautiful, colorful sculpture is a tribute to all elephants who suffer in circuses. The heavy shackle and chain around the elephant’s lifelike leg evoke emotion and disturbing images. Elephants in the circus spend almost every minute of every day in heavy leg chains and are beaten with bullhooks (rods with sharp metal hooks on the end) in order to make them perform unnatural and confusing tricks.
Families attending the circus have a right to know what goes on behind the scenes in this seemingly benign but actually very violent world. For more information about the circus, please visit Circuses.com. [Melissa Karpel, 02/26/2007]
