Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio - Doodlebug Train Horror Monument Many years ago, the Doodlebug, a gasoline-powered rail car, ran from Akron to Geauga Lake Park and hauled travelers to other destinations. On July 31, 1940 the train crashed into a 73-car freight train at Front Street and Hudson Drive and nearly all [43 of 44 passengers] were killed.
Recently some students from Falls High School took up a collection and did some research on the accident, and they had a plaque made to commemorate it. The plaque is in a park at Front Street and Bailey Road. [Kathi, 03/12/2007]
[RA: The Doodlebug Disaster battles the Ashtabula Horror as Ohio's most awful train wreck. It happened right next to a busy street, during evening rush hour. The collision ruptured and ignited the Doodlebug's gas tank, and most of the victims were immolated in front of horrified onlookers.
