Washington, DC - J. Edgar Hoover's Grave - Not "Shared"

J. Edgar Hoover's grave is not shared with Clyde Tolson's; Clyde Tolson's is about 5 or 6 plots away, right between Matlovitch and Hoover. Quite a row!

There is a grave of an American Indian right near the wall that borders the jail whose gravestone always has a number of colored stones assembled in various patterns on top. John Philip Sousa ("The March King"), a native of DC, is buried here. [Coop, 09/05/1999]

Washington, DC - AC/DC Sights of DC

Here are several tips for gay travelers to Washington DC. Lafayette Park, across from the White House, sports two statues of special interest to gay travelers: On the Northwest corner, there is a statue of an Indian brave instructing a youth in the art of war. This statue is dedicated to Baron von Steuben, a Prussian soldier who was a hero of the American Revolution, one of George Washington's key lieutenants, a leader of the colonial forces at Valley Forge, and a gay man. On the Southeast corner of the same park, another statue features Alexander Hamilton and his lover, John Laurens, holding hands.

In Congressional Cemetery, one can view the tombstone of Air Force Sergeant Leonard Matlovich, a hero of the Vietnam war and the first openly gay person to be featured on the cover of Time Magazine. His tombstone bears two pink triangles and this inscription: "They gave me a medal for killing two men, and a discharge for loving one." Just a short distance from Matlovich's tombstone is another plot of interest: the shared gravesite of FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and his "lifelong companion," Clyde Tolson.
