The Intelligent Whale: Ancient Submarine

A Jules Vern-esque experimental 19th century submarine, exhibited on stilts so that you can stick your head inside from below. Escaped the wrath of Superstorm Sandy, even though the surrounding museum was flooded.

Intelligent Whale.

The Intelligent Whale

The National Guard Militia Museum of New Jersey was swamped by at least five feet of water, mixed with oil and mud, during Hurricane Sandy. Many of its more fragile exhibits were destroyed. Ironically, the one exhibit best suited to ride out a hurricane, the 19th century "Intelligent Whale" submarine, was displayed atop a scaffold that kept it out of the water. The museum has been gutted, and it may take many months to reopen. But when it does the Intelligent Whale should be there -- unless the National Guard decides to move it somewhere further inland.
