Greenville, Kentucky - Warren Oates Memorial Hall

The road would be a lonelier place without GTO, the pathological weaver of tall tales who made life interesting for counter-culture moppets James Taylor, Dennis Wilson and Laurie Bird in the film "Two-Lane Blacktop." GTO was Warren Oates, a wide-ranging Kentucky-born actor who now has a dedicated wing in the Duncan Museum and Art Gallery in Greenville, where he frequented the Palace Movie Theater as a boy growing up in Muhlenberg County's Depoy.

The museum's permanent exhibit of memorabilia and photos is a touching tribute to a man whose retort "Why not" in The Wild Bunch and iconic "Lighten up Francis," in Stripes should be heeded. [alma moss, 07/26/2008]
