Olowalu, Hawaii - Manly Petroglyphs

I went to look for these petroglyphs, and as sparse as the directions were, I found the place, but the dirt roads around there were all marked "Private." I saw one that said just "no motorized vehicles" but I was not equipped for a long desert jaunt, and the next sign said "private." So for some reason I heeded these warnings and left. Look for the old store on the north side of the road from Kihei to Lahaina. I think there are a water tank and some trees just west of the store. Drive north on the dirt road behind the store past the burned out sugar cane toward the mountain. As you get into the canyon, look uphill to the right for the rusting remnants of a staircase. Scramble up the rocks and you'll see a collection of hardbodied ancients etched into the rocks. [K. Ward, 09/10/2000]
