Ford Theater Gum Tree

It is with great regret that I bring you this tidbit from downtown DC. This tree is now officially gum-free, although not completely, as there are a few new fresh ones scattered around the tree. Now, just outside of the entrance of the Petersen House, is a bucket for people to spit their gum, and the tree is now enclosed in metal to prevent history from repeating itself.

I recall seeing this gum tree back in 1999, almost completely covered with gum of all colors and flavors, and many had a Lincoln penny pressed within the gooey mess. Perhaps a bizarre tribute to the President?

Ford Theater Gum Tree

You too can feed the tree. Hundreds of passersby have left their chew on the trunk of an actual gum tree across the street from Ford's Theater where Lincoln was assassinated. Maybe they want their mouths empty to savor the $3 lukewarm bottled water the guy sells whose cart is chained to the trunk. Don't lean against this tree.
