Knowlton Ice Museum

The Knowlton Ice Museum tells the story of when "ice harvesting" was a hot job, and blocks of ice were delivered to your ice box. Horses were involved in ice harvesting in some cases, and the saws were crazy-huge! This museum is family-owned and the family is darling. Cost is $5 per person. There is a fifteen minute DVD to watch on the ice harvesting, then you walk through tons of antiques, from ice carts to tools to ice boxes to milk trucks. Staggering to think one guy collected all this. [Marci Christian, 05/08/2012]

[RA: Before electric refrigeration (and even after), freshwater ice chopped from lakes and rivers was used into the warm months to preserve food and medicine. Open as a museum since 1990, this collection of 19th and 20th century ice tools is the nation's largest. The museum includes vehicles, memorabilia, films on video, and every aspect of the ice industry.]
