Visitor Tips and News About Smoke Hole Caverns
A new gift shop has opened at the caverns. Tickets are now sold in the gift shop, which is next to the caverns/motel.[Kristen, 05/08/2013]
Smoke Hole Caverns' previous gift shop was torched by an arsonist in 2009.
It burned down! Not the cave, but the huge gift shop. Seems the 60-year old owner was indicted on sexual [assault] charges with a 20-year old female employee, and later that fall the gift shop burned to the ground of "suspicious causes." There's probably a moral to the story in here for someone!
I don't know the status of the cave business but it has always been a favorite of mine when in WV. My party really enjoyed it in Sept. 2009.[NiceBob Addis, World's Champion Stalagmite Sitter, 02/06/2010]
On Nov 10, 2009 the gift shop and restaurant were destroyed. A 24-yr old man was charged with arson. At the time, the co-owner was serving a 2- to 10-year jail sentence. The commercial cave appears to be open, with tickets sold at the Log Motel.
