A $100 million version of China in miniature has closed after ten years of vying for visitors outside the moat of the Magic Kingdom in Florida. Florida Splendid China, a 76-acre Kissimmee attraction indirectly run by the government of China, closed forever on December 31, 2003, a victim of falling attendance....
[01/05/2004] Complete News StoryHaving recently visited Florida's Splendid China I can vouch for your accuracy on the review. It is amazing! I would urge your viewers to make haste if they intend to visit however, as it is in serious disrepair and I am afraid it will not be open much longer.
We visited in early spring and found many parts of the park unopen. There was no vendor or machine offering food or beverages in the far reaches of the park, so visitors should definitely bring their own. It is a long walk back and the heat is terrible by now. There were no animals anywhere. The miniatures are being stolen, even the tiny tiles and bricks are taken, and the landscaping is not being tended. The ponds are pea soup. The highlight of the visit though is the evening show. The music, costuming, acrobatics and drama are a must-see experience!
I am a 2nd generation Floridian, raised in Orlando, and hope this is one attraction that will outlive the Mouse! Too bad they didn't put it closer to Orlando.
[Pat Curry, 06/11/2000]Florida's Splendid China: It may WELL be owned by the Chinese government. Since it is an exact copy of Splendid China in Shenzhen, China, which is owned by China Travel Service which IS the Chinese government.
Course it doesn't compare (in Shenzhen) with it's "cousin" across the road Windows of the World, which has the Eiffel Tower, Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, White House, European Village, Pyramids, Manhattan, and so on, and so on, and so on.
If you have made it this far, then you better hit the Museum of Opium, in Humen, a mere 70 km north of Shenzhen. Highlight? A reproduction of an Opium Addict's House! Whoo-ee.
