Highlands, North Carolina: Bridal Veil Falls
Notable not for the waterfall, but for the little road that once allowed cars to drive behind it. You can still walk behind it.

The drive-through road is open again. This fall is actually in Highlands, not Cashiers.
[John, 02/21/2008]In 2003, the large overhang of the drive-thru falls dislodged and fell off. This is one huge chunk of rock, I am guessing, 12 tall and 40 feet long. This has closed the circular drive under the falls. But the garnets are plentiful from the smaller pieces of rock that fell. I just gathered a bunch in August.
[Sgt. Pete, 09/24/2004]Bridal Veil Drive Thru Falls
It's a waterfall you can drive behind in your car. Actually being there is neater than what the picture implies AND it's not very far from the World's Largest 10 Commandments in Murphy, NC.

Tipster Sgt. Pete notes: "The rocks that make up the cliff/waterfall overhang are made of a granite and mica. The erosion of the rock by natural forces causes the mica to become brittle and dislodge itself from the hillside. This mica has semiprecious garnets embedded -- you can pick up chunks and find them. They appear a dark red, almost ruby color. Most are the size of a BB."
