Spook Hill:

Spook Hill is among the most famous "gravity hills" in the world. You park your car at the bottom -- the town has painted a helpful line on the street at the starting point -- put it in neutral, then sit in amazement as you roll uphill.

Spook Hill

We came and were disappointed. We could not get the illusion to work after trying four attempts. We left very unspooked.

Illusion?!

Spook Hill

I was born and raised in this town and still reside here. Many people come to Spook Hill, but leave disappointed because they cannot see the effect. As a youngster visiting this attraction many times, my parents taught me how to see the illusion. People look out of their windows and it still looks like the vehicle is going downhill. Here's the trick: look through your rear view mirror as you're rolling backward. That's what makes the illusion as if your vehicle is rolling uphill.

[Steven, 10/11/2019]

It's a good idea to look in your rear view mirror whenever you roll backward, not just when you roll uphill against the force of gravity.
