I grew up only a block from what we called "Jack's Mansion." Jake and his brother lived next door to us until they passed on. The mansion was used as apartments, I was told, in the 1940s. I used to deliver newspapers to it in the 1950s as a kid. People living in the area were disappointed when the mansion was sold to build a motel. It was really a beautiful place during the day, and scary at night.

Bellaire, Ohio - House that Jack the Donkey built It was a house on the edge of town (now a motel) that Jack the donkey and his owner Jake built. Had a nursery rhyme made of it "The house that Jack built." Jake was the owner of a coal mine and very eccentric.... The only thing left of the house is a piece of wood that hung over the front door that had a picture of Jack carved into it!
[steve, 11/14/2000]According to the folks at the Bellaire Public Library, Jake Heatherington was Jack's owner. "The 'House that Jack Built' was torn down in 1959 to make room for a motel addition (motel is still in use today). The photo is of the keystone (from the original house, above the front door) which now has a permanent home at the Bellaire Public Library."
