Staple Bend Tunnel is America's first railroad tunnel. You can park at a place in Mineral Point to see it. There is a 2-mile Rails-to-Trails path leading to the tunnel -- individuals are permitted to walk and bike on this trail.[Lori S., 05/20/2011]
Tunnel was completed in 1833. Was a local carriage route and lies along the path of the Johnstown Flood.
Address: Staple Bend Tunnel, Mineral Point, PA
Directions: Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site. About 5 miles from Johnstown, PA. Take US Route 22 to the Mundy's Corner/Nanty Glo exit. Turn right onto PA Route 271 South. Continue on Route 271 South approximately 5 miles until a (marked) left turn onto Mineral Point Road (PA 3030). After approximately 2 miles make a (marked) right turn onto Beech Hill Road and proceed over the bridge. Go through the railroad underpass (wait for the green light!); the paved parking lot for Staple Bend Tunnel is on right.
