Mobile, Alabama: U.S.S Alabama Battleship
The "Mighty A," veteran of World War II, was saved from the scrap heap by the nickels and dimes of Alabama school children. Good views from the adjacent park.

USS Alabama
You can walk all over this huge decommissioned warship and visit areas of the ship that normally tourists wouldn't get to -- all self-guided. And there's another bonus: you can also climb onto the USS Drum submarine, and there are plenty of planes to investigate as well.

The USS Alabama Battleship Park covers everything from World War II to the Iraq War. The USS Alabama battleship, which can be toured very extensively, was used in World War II. There are three routes that you follow through the ship that are color coded. They all lead to each other. However, you can quit at any time. But you get to see everything from the ship's mess hall to its jail, isolation ward for the sick, and even the depths of the ship where there are engine components. You also can tour the USS Drum submarine. Previously people were not allowed in because of damage done after a hurricane. However, everything is now back up and running.
The submarine is amazing to tour as well. There aren't many areas that are blocked off, so you can literally reach out and touch anything. If you just want to go to the park and pay $2.00 then you can tour the tanks, planes, and helicopters outside, but you cannot go inside them. The battleship is a very entertaining experience.
I live in Mobile, and I go here every few years. It is fun every time. If you plan to tour the whole thing, which you should, plan to be there for two hours at least. Wear comfortable shoes. All of the tour areas are well lit, but if you bring a flashlight you can peer into some of the areas that are blocked off, which I find very interesting.
Also, part of the tour is a warehouse filled with World War II planes, helicopters, boats, and other vehicles. There is a motion ride inside as well that costs about $5.00 and is moderately fun, not the best. It simulates flying in a plane and being in a dogfight.

We showed up during the last hour the park was open so we didn't have to pay admission. We were able to walk around the exhibits, just not board anything.

We just drove by and paid the $2/car admission. This is way more than just a battleship and submarine memorial. It has a B-52 Bomber, Calamity Jane, a rocket, and about a dozen tanks. We just drove around for ten minutes and hopped out next to the various armored vehicles - which you can touch, but are strongly urged NOT to climb on. There is even a "jet on a stick"! And a mini Veterans Memorial wall. This was a very nice attraction and seems to be growing in quality -- you can spend a few minutes or a few hours.
Alabama seems well prepared to fight a vintage war with Florida, if it ever were to act up.

You can peer into a snapshot from World War II to Iraqi Freedom at this fine American military park. At Battleship Memorial Park you are able to walk the decks of a mighty battleship, go below in a World War II submarine, view cockpits of combat aircraft... you can also see tanks, a Vietnam River Patrol Boat, and a plane like the one flown by the Tuskegee Airmen.
The largest part of this park, the USS Alabama, was the one thing I didn't do since it wasn't quite open when I stopped by on my recent trip. The park in and of itself is amazing though. There is a $2 admission fee to park, but it's worth it. To enter the USS Alabama, it's around $12.
