Train Graveyard

Train graveyard is not there anymore. All of the trains have been removed according to an old timer at the general store.

Train Graveyard

We visited the "Steepest standard gauge railroad grade in the US." We drove around the tracks looking for the graveyard, but couldn't find it. It may have eluded our eyeballs, but if it was a big as the original post said it was, I'm sure we would have seen it. It's still a fascinating piece of railroad, and worth the visit.

Saluda Grade "Train Graveyard."

The "Saluda Grade" is an extremely steep section of railroad track in the mountains -- I have been told but cannot confirm that it is the steepest railroad grade in the US. Trains were split up and hauled up in pieces by multiple engines. At the bottom of the steepest approach is a huge - I mean HUGE - pile of the ones that didn't make it. Word is it holds some record for most train wrecks. My father said the "Train Graveyard" was still there a very few years ago. They'd slide down and wreck and they'd just push them off the tracks and try again.
