Sylacauga, Alabama - Gravity Hill

Gravity Hill is less than one mile from my house. It is not haunted! It is a hill that really goes downhill. It just seems like you are going up hill. One day I made up a story about a man who once lived in a trailer who was missing his gold. I really doctored it up good. I added that the car that took his gold, he pulled it back up the hill. Of course when my 7 year old saw our car "magically" go backwards, I thought he was going to tear the roof off of the car to run away.

Guys like to carry their girls there, hoping their "fear" will make them sit really close to them. People say "Gloria's Bridge" is haunted, the "Avondale" boxcar is haunted too. Several cemeteries (which I will not go to!) are haunted. Some say it's what you make it. But, those spirits are real, and I don't have any desire to open those kind of doors! [L. I grew up in Sylacauga, and anyone who says Gravity Hill is made up can stick it in your eye!

I went all the time and it is real and it does work -- it will pull you up hill either forward or backward with your car in neutral. [Michele Coxce, 01/28/2009]

I have lived on Gravity Hill for 30 years. It is nothing but an optical illusion. From my home you can see you are really rolling down hill. A surveyor checked it once, and it has a 2 degree decline for about 75-ft. then a 31 degree decline, which gives it the appearance of going uphill.

But to add a story to the hype. I told an insurance salesman, that was asking about it that we had to put a septic tank on the hill above the house so we could flush lol, and I guess he still believes. [keith tyler, 05/31/2005]

When I was in my early twenties, a bunch of us girls went riding and drinking the night before my best friend got married. (We had an already-married and pregnant SOBER driver). Not only did the car "roll" uphill, so did the "pee" when we realized we couldn't make it back to a restroom! Now, that was probably the most redneck bachelorette party ever! [Nancy, 09/28/2004]
