Taos, New Mexico: Dennis Hopper's Jail Cell

In 1975, Hopper was incarcerated for about 20 minutes in the cell after he was arrested in Taos for reckless driving and running away from the cops. It's a minor tourist landmark now.

Downtown. The Old Courthouse doesn't look like a traditional courthouse, but it's the largest building on the north side of historic Taos Plaza, a block west of Paseo Del Pueblo Norte.

Dennis Hopper's Jail Cell

In Taos Plaza, the Old County Courthouse -- now an artists co-op -- housed the Old Jail (there is a sign indicating where this is on the first floor). The doors were kept on the cells. The jail was used in the 1969 movie Easy Rider, and, later, in 1975, Dennis Hopper was briefly a resident of the jail. A copy of his mug shot hangs on one of the doors. When Hopper died, his funeral was held at the San Francisco de Asis Mission Church about a mile south, and he is buried nearby.

Hopper was incarcerated very briefly in the cell -- think coffee break length -- after he was nabbed in Taos for reckless driving and running away from the cops.
