The water in the head sounds so real -- as if it's dripping from the fountain five feet away.

[Ivy Schmidt, 08/23/2017]

The Head has embedded speakers that play two different sounds: trickling water to evoke the aquifer beneath it, and clanging metal to represent humankind's jarring impact on the environment.

Brick Head.

Big, Clanging Head of Bricks

Ten feet tall, weighing eight tons, it's the largest of several big brick heads built by New York artist James Tyler. Named "Groundwater Colossus," it's meant to personify the Ogallala Aquifer that sits beneath it. Loudspeakers embedded in the head sometimes play the sounds of tricking water -- and sometimes play the sounds of clanging metal to represent the jarring impact of people on the environment. Tyler completed the head in 2010 and shipped it to Lincoln as bricks. It sat in storage until it was reassembled 2012.
