Last Vehicle Out of Iraq
This is not the only vehicle on display; there are also monuments and benches to reflect on those who gave all. Great history on display.
[Chris Hughes, 09/13/2014]Last Vehicle Out of Iraq
Among the dozens of trucks, tanks, big guns, and aircraft displayed outside the 1st Cavalry Division Museum, the Last Vehicle Out of Iraq was given a special welcome and place of honor (on a street corner) in July 2012. It's an otherwise unspectacular MRAP, which was a truck designed to survive the home-built land mines in Iraq that had been blowing up America's Humvees.
Just before dawn on December 18, 2011, this particular MRAP was the last vehicle in the last American military convoy to cross the border from Iraq into Kuwait, officially ending the war (at least for American vehicles) begun eight years earlier. Someone painted "Last Vehicle Out of Iraq" on its side, along with the date and an Army star.
It's an odd kind of war artifact, and can be viewed simultaneously as a symbol of "Mission Accomplished," or "Thank God We Finally Got Out of There."
