Okeene boasts that its Rattlesnake Hunt, held since 1939, is the World's Oldest. Rattlesnakes have been hunted since settlers first arrived, but it was entrepreneur Orville Von Gulker who turned what had been a chore into an annual competition. More recent touches are the "Den of Death" (where the captured rattlesnakes are kept) and the Butcher Shop (where the rattlesnakes are turned into rattlesnake meat). The hunt ends with the Largest Snake Contest; the winning hunter gets $150 and bragging rights.
